BRF, one of the largest food companies in the world, owner of brands like Sadia, Perdigão, and Qualy, and Marfrig, a leading company in beef, pork, and poultry, as well as the largest hamburger producer globally, have earned the Gold Seal from the Brazilian GHG Protocol Program, the highest level of certification granted to companies that meet all transparency criteria in publishing greenhouse gas emission inventories. This is the first time Marfrig has received the seal, while BRF celebrates its 15th consecutive year.

BRF concluded the 2023 cycle with a 21% reduction in total emissions for Scopes 1 and 2 compared to the 2019 baseline, primarily driven by the prioritization of clean energy consumption from self-generated wind farms. In the value chain, over 50% of poultry production uses solar energy, and 100% of the grains acquired from direct suppliers in the Amazon and Cerrado regions are tracked. The company is one of the 27 founders of the program and has been publishing its greenhouse gas emissions inventory in the Public Emissions Registry for over a decade. Since 2009, it has been part of the B3 Efficient Carbon Index (ICO2).

Marfrig, in 2023, achieved a 20% reduction in total Scopes 1 and 2 emissions compared to the 2019 baseline, mainly due to its focus on renewable energy sources. The promotion of sustainable, low-carbon, deforestation-free livestock farming is one of its primary goals. The cattle procurement processes from farms in the Amazon biome have met all the criteria and guidelines of the Amazon Cattle Ranching Public Commitment for the 12th consecutive year. This performance was certified by independent audits monitoring deforestation prevention practices and human rights protections, such as respecting indigenous peoples and prohibiting child labor or slavery-like conditions. Additionally, in 2023, over 875,000 animals were raised on farms with low-emission systems in the value chain. Since 2021, Marfrig has reintegrated 4,000 farms as part of its inclusion process. As a result of these actions, Scope 3 emissions dropped by 9.9% compared to the 2019 baseline.

Paulo Pianez, Sustainability Director at BRF and Marfrig, highlights that the seal is a recognition of the robustness and reliability of both companies' commitments to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

The Brazilian GHG Protocol Program was established in 2008 and is responsible for adapting the GHG Protocol method to the Brazilian context and developing calculation tools for estimating greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. It was developed by FGVces and WRI, in partnership with the Ministry of the Environment, the Brazilian Business Council for Sustainable Development (CEBDS), the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBSCD), and 27 founding companies.
